Dr. Dewey Maugham – In his forties, he’s rather average-looking; even a little studious in an unpretentious way. He almost has the the appearance of being a country doctor among analysts. And yet there is something about him that indicates his whole ego, his id, and perhaps even his whole libido, violently, if subconsciously, resist the onslaught of middle age.
Paula Maugham – Dewey’s wife. Paula is still an attractive woman without being overly glamorous, and chic in her own way. Hers is a constant battle between the comfortable, conventional way of life she has known with Dewey for many years, and a more worldly sophistication and excitement she apparently yearns for.
Leslie Maugham – Small, shapely, blond, pretty. Leslie is as much of a delight as any seventeen-year-old girl can be when she realizes that she is almost a woman, and no longer an adolescent. An only child, wise in the ways of adults, Leslie is a girl whose two intelligent parents have spent years carefully preparing for life.
Mr. Wellman – Short, dark, in his early twenties, and a sympathetic bundle of tangled ganglia. He seems to carry a tremendous burden of self-doubt and fear of rejection. Apparently, he’s been this way for a long time.
Dr. Alec Rice – A contemporary of Dewey’s, although he seems younger. A perfect example of the well-preserved male. Dark, attractive, athletically sleek, charming, brimful of the social graces. It’s obvious if he has life to live over one more, he’d fall in with himself again.
Barbara Leonard – In her early thirties, a beautiful woman. Chic, worldly, bright intelligent, and obviously aware of the fact that sex makes the world go round.
